“This recent global pandemic reminds us that we have to find new ways to keep our elders safe and healthy in the community.”
-Ron Chew

AiPACE is a solution for the current eldercare crisis.

Researchers call it the “Silver Tsunami” — the ballooning of the elder population in the United States.

  • Over 10,000 boomers turn 65 every day

  • By 2030, the older adult population is estimated to double. Those over the age of 65 will reach 20% of the nation’s population by 2050.

  • Here in Washington, 70% of people over the age of 65 will require some form of long-term support services.

While nursing homes have served its role in care for elders, the institutional care model has become increasingly difficult to sustain.

  • Since 2017, over 19 nursing homes have either shut their doors or announced imminent closures in Washington State.

  • In King County, the Asian community sadly lost one of two culturally specific nursing homes in 2019, reducing capacity by 60%, down to only 100 remaining skilled-nursing beds.

If given a choice, most elders would prefer to age at home with independence to remain in their community. Yet, coordinating all the necessary care leaves many families with tremendous stress and burdens. For limited English speaking immigrant families, language and cultural barriers pose additional challenges.

We’ve found a better way to care for our elders.

Studies show that elders who age in the community live happier, healthier and more independent lives than their counterparts in nursing homes. AiPACE makes this happen by taking care of elders’ physical, mental, and social needs while they age at home, in the community.

As our older family members age, AiPACE ensures they can stay in their neighborhoods for as long as possible, close to family, friends, and the community they know and love.

By partnering and co-locating with affordable housing and childcare center on the Pacific Medical Center campus, AiPACE contributes to the efforts against gentrification and displacement. It promotes intergenerational connections and keeps communities healthy and whole.

AiPACE benefits more than just the elders…

  • Caregivers experience peace of mind with the help of a professional support team.

  • Families stay together where culture and traditions carry on from generation to generation.

  • Vulnerable communities who have historically been displaced stay intact

  • Our region leads the way in becoming an age-friendly community and a model for others.

As our City continues to address the challenge of affordability, it’s crucial that we make investments that allow our senior neighbors to remain in the communities they’ve known.
— Mayor Jenny A. Durkan, City of Seattle

The API community, including our elders, have experienced anti-Asian hate for centuries. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this violence as anti-Asian hate crimes increased more than 73 percent in 2020.

When communities have been historically targeted and displaced – whether it be due to race/ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, etc. – it is essential to our well-being that we lean on each other for care, strength and love.

The AiPACE Center is more than a building, it is part of a larger collaborative strategy that caters to our community’s well-being, helping lower income families and seniors live and thrive in the neighborhood they call home. As South Seattle continues to go through major development and rapid gentrification, long-time residents – many of whom are Asian elders and families – have been priced out. This is an opportunity to keep residents rooted in Beacon Hill and to preserve the familiarity, accessibility and continuity of community in the neighborhood.
